Why Support Cycling?

Jordan Anderson | Student:

I started riding mountain bikes just for fun during my 7th grade school year, but not competitively. In my junior year of high school, I began doing more serious mountain bike rides with my aunt and, of all things, my old babysitter. The more I rode, the faster I got. Recognizing that I was lugging around a 40-pound-downhill bike, my uncle Paul, who was already on the Owens team, offered to loan me one of his old cross-country mountain bikes. With this borrowed, lighter bike, I entered my first race in 2010, the Shasta Lemurian, and I won my class. Then I tried out another one of Paul's mountain bikes and liked it even better, so I bought it. Soon I was racing in all the local mountain bike events and doing mountain and road training rides with the team. I'm lovin' it.

The first time I saw the movie "Breaking Away", circa 1979, I was hooked on cycling. I traded in my Schwinn 10 speed for an Italian bicycle, got some Lycra shorts, leather cycling shoes and began to ride and race in the Redding area. That summer, I related to and became Dave Stoller. I shaved my legs and became Italian. After a long hiatus from competitive cycling I have returned to a sport I love. I no longer have an Italian bike (but still ride Campy) and the leather shoes are gone, but my desire to ride fast and give it my all like Dave remains.

"...The bike is a terrible thing that drives you to make excessive efforts, inhuman efforts. It takes a racing cyclist to understand what it means to hurt yourself on a bike. Apart from that, everything else about cycling is wonderful: the friendships, the tactics, the ambiance, the glory." Jacques Anquetil

My interest in endurance sports began 30 years ago as a high school distance runner in Athens, Greece. Since then, I have trained for and competed at distances from 800 m through ultramarathons. In the late '80s, inspired by the Wide World of Sports coverage, I picked up swimming and bicycling and competed as a professional triathlete, twice placing 3rd in the National Long Course Championships, and in the top 15 in the Ironman World Championships. For the past few years, I have focused on bicycle road racing, for the pleasure of riding a bicycle fast, the mental and physical challenges of competition, the camaraderie of my cycling buddies, and the overall health and enjoyment it provides.

I started cycling back in the 70's riding my sister's Schwinn which began my love affair with the sport. From that point, I rode and raced BMX bikes for years. Eventually, I started riding mountain bikes which I still enjoy today. However, I found that mountain bike riding took a great deal of time, so, I started road cycling. Whether I am riding on the road or in the dirt, the feeling I get reminds of the first time I learned how to ride a bike.

Over the years I have logged a number of hours running. After developing a stress fracture in 2002 from running I turned to road cycling for exercise. I took part in the "Wednesday" evening ride in our area and learned that road cycling is an extremely challenging sport. The part of road cycling that I found intriguing is the sport combined both individual and team efforts. In 2003 I had the opportunity to go to Europe and watch part of the Tour de France. After watching the Tour I made the decision to step up of my level of commitment to the sport and began racing as well as forming the Owens Healthcare Cycling Team. The rest is history...

Since I was a kid I've always loved riding anything on two wheels. I started out racing motocross, over the years I became more competitive, and in 2008 I turned pro and picked up road cycling for motocross training purposes. After spending some time on the road bike, I realized that I really enjoyed it so i bought a mountain bike as well. After my first ride in the dirt out at Whiskeytown, I found a new passion for cycling. Started riding with my friend Jordan, who was already on the Owens cycling team, and then started riding with the team on a regular basis. Eventually I got onto to the team and I've had a blast so far, and look forward to keep improving and having fun!

In 1973, I got a red Schwinn 5-speed for my eighth birthday. It had a banana seat, a huge gear shift on the top tube, a slick rear tire and chopper-like handlebars. I rode that bike everywhere - school, Little League, friends' houses, motorcycle trails, rural roads, rain or shine. No helmet, no water bottle, no chain lube, no spare tube, no heart rate monitor. In 1992 I moved to Redding and entered the Lemurian mountain bike race. It was insanely muddy and difficult and awesome. My equipment has changed a lot, but I feel like I'm continuing the adventures I started on that old five speed.

Cycling gives me a chance to enjoy the beautiful area we live in and develop great friendships with others who have a passion to push their pedals to the point of exhaustion.

My aunt got me on the road bike a few years ago. We started doing small road rides here and there, and I advanced quickly. Eventually, I started "riding", more like getting dropped with the Owens team. When Mountain bike season came around, I borrowed my aunts old, Gary Fisher and fell in love. Just like every other cyclist, I started to acquire more and more bikes. The speed, excitement, and comradery of friends keep me pedaling.
